There are some spectacular cars coming up for sale in January in Arizona Scottsdale.
One of them is a very rare 1962 Porsche 356 Carrera GS.
I have written about this model before (see post here) but the Carrera 2 GS is a superb car and worth writing about whenever it does come up for sale. Only about 300 Carrera 2 GS cars were made by Porsche when it introduced the car in 1955.
So what makes a Carrera GS so special?
Well basically the carrera 2 GS is a race version of the normal 356. The car was developed by Fuhrmann for the grueling Carrera Panamericana race in Mexico (this is where the name Carrera is derived from). Fuhrmann was a legendary engineer also known for developing the engine in the highly successful 550 spyder.
The Carrera 2 GS attractiveness lies in the high powered engine -a 4 cylinder 2L (thus the Carrera 2 designation) dual twin throat carburettor – good for approximately 130 bhp. The car also has a dry sump lubrication. It is important to note that this car is NOT matching numbers as the original engine was replaced in the 1960s by a correct type engine which is notified in the Kardex today. The car does retain its original gearbox as well as original body panels (correctly stamped).
What makes this car extra special is the original factory supplied electric sunroof – only 27 cars had this as an option. The ventilated chromes wheels were also a factory option and are original to the car. The car retains the original color combination. Additionally this 356 is one of the first cars to come with disc brakes.
Bonhams has an estimate of $650-800’ooo. For more details see the original listing here.

Some additional pictures below. Notice the air vented chrome wheels – original to this car.
The wooden trimmed steering wheel is correct for this car.
The twin exhaust below the back spoiler is another sign that this is no ordinary 356 but a carrera 2 version.
