Sighted A very rare 1958 Ferrari 250 LWB California spyder

Classic CarsCollector's Insights

Collectors who long for rarity and exclusivity will be happy to learn that RM Sotheby’s is auctioning a very special car in Monterey in August 2015.

A Ferrari 250 LWB California spyder from 1958 (chassis 1307GT) will be auctioned at Monterey.

Only 104 California’s (of that 50 were LWB) ever left the factory and the California today is among the most collectible Ferrari ever made.

But the car above is no ordinary cal spyder.

First it is a open headlight car-which in my opinion is more beautiful than the covered headlight version (the market does not agree with me on this). Secondly there are several design features taken from the legendary 410 superamerica. A unique air in-take on the hood, and special side vents (see main picture) remind us strongly of the 410 superamerica.

Perhaps the most beautiful feature of this car is the rare and completely original hard-top that comes with the car in a beautiful grey contrasting nicely with the dark blue color (which are both original colors to the car and absolutely correct).

Another unique feature is the switch box which includes the ignition is now found in the centre console rather under the wheel giving the driver more leg-room.

The estimate is not known yet but according to one leading Ferrari expert – the range will likely be $9-11m. Given how rare this car is and that most California spyders don’t have these special features – I would say collectors can bid safely until $9m without overpaying in todays classic car market. The LWB california spyder is more beautiful with open headlights. This my opinion as it harmonizes better with the shape of the car.

The back is no less beautiful. Notice the factory delivered hardtop that contrasts with the dark blu color. Also the side vents are taken from the 410 Superamerica at the time.
