Is an Aston Martin DB5 worth €1m now?

Classic CarsCollector's Insights

This past Sunday a normal ‘standard’ Aston Martin DB5, in not even in the correct original color, sold for nearly €1m (it was €931′ooo) in Paris at Artcurial.

While the market for vintage Ferrari has been exceptionally strong so far this year, it seems that Aston Martin is catching up- rapidly!

The car sold at Artcurial was no standout car. It was a normal DB5 (remember that ‘vantage’ versions exist with a stronger motor). The car that sold had a black interior which was incorrect (the original color had been beige which is nice to the green exterior color).

The car did have much restoration work carried out including gearbox and engine restoration which would add a certain value. However €930′ooo for a normal DB5 is a strong price. But it seems the market for a DB5 now is at least €1m or $1.3m. Consider that Gooding just sold a fine DB5 in light blue for $1.5m just in August at Pebble Beach (see here).

Having said that- I think in general, the market for DB4 and DB5 remains very reasonable.

It is important to remember the DB4 and DB5 represent the golden age of the Aston Martin history. Bodied by Touring in Italy, these Aston Martins are pieces of art. Only approximately 1200 DB4 and around 1’050 DB5 were built which include special models, convertibles and racing versions.

You can still buy a DB4 series 1-5 for reasonable sums today ($450-$55o’ooo will secure you a nice normal DB4) . Even the much sought after and rare DB4 GT, of which only 75 were made (consider the DB4GT the answer to Ferrari 250 SWB) was sold for a very reasonable $2m at RM auctions in August (see here).

Aston Martin prices are rising strongly but perhaps they are only catching up to the rest of the car market – especially the auction leader Ferrari.
