Sighted Jaguar Supersonic by Ghia

Classic CarsCollector's Insights

How often over the past few years have you heard dealers, collectors and owners say that classic cars are like art on four wheels.

Often this is nice expression but really not applicable.

Classic cars are cars that are meant to be driven. However there is one sports car where this term ‘art on four wheels’ applies better than most other cars.

It is the very rare (only three exist) Jaguar supersonic by Ghia from 1952.

What I particularly like about this car is that it is a sculpture and breathtakingly beautiful but also a fast sports car powered by three twin choke Weber carburetors producing roughly 220bhp.

Those who want can drive this car aggressively and shift the car which is has a four speed manual gearbox.  But those who want to take the car for a Sunday cruise or go to the opera in a black tie can also opt for this elegant rare British supercar. RM Sothebys is selling this car at Monterey in August and while the estimate is not known, a similar car sold at Bonhams for €750’ooo but back in 2007 (see details here). It is fair to say that this car is worth at least two to three times this amount today.

The sleek lines of the Supersonic remind us of the  jet age that was just emerging in the 1950s in the US and globally in the 1950s.

The interior is as elegant as the exterior. Surely the new owner will feel like a king with the Connolly leather and high grade materials used. The leather seats are the original seats installed in 1952 by Ghia!

This car is the only version to have the three dual choke weber carbs while the others have a standard SU carburettors. This engine is a marvel. The weber carbs are a piece of art. For me a good reason to buy this particular Jaguar supersonic and not the other two examples.
