Alfa Romeo is responsible for making some of the most beautiful and elegant cars. I am thinking the Alfa Romeo Stradale 33 but also the Alfa Romeo TZ.
But for me there is another Alfa that sits along these two cars: It is the Zagato 1900 SS (ss for supersport).
Best of all: RM Sothebys has one for sale at auction in Arizona later this week.
Only 39 of these sculptures were built by Zagato in 1956.
This car has a lot going for it. To start with it has quite good racing history. Additionally the car recently was subjected to a thorough and detailed restoration. I find the current color scheme (dark blue over tobacco exceptional) even though this is not the cars original colors.
However there are some important issues that the buyer should be aware of. To start the car does not carry its original engine. Instead the correct type was secured. Secondly the car has weber carbs and a five speed gearbox which are also not correct for this car. The good news is the correct carbs (solex) do come with this car.
I think if the price is correct and the bidder gets the car for less than the low estimate of $1.4 – it could be a good deal for the buyer. No its not matching numbers but I am not sure it matters all that much for an Alfa. The correct type engine is installed and the car is delivered with two sets of carburettors.
Last because it is a 1956 car it can take part in the Mille Mille. For me good enough reason to give this car some careful consideration.
More information on the car can be found here.
Lets take a look at some pictures. The car is a dream from a styling point of view.
The cars interior is very attractive. It suits the black exterior very well.
The engine is the correct ‘type’ not matching numbers however the carburettors were originally Solex. However the webers (that are now installed) probably sound much better and I personally would leave them.
At the right price I would buy this car. The style and shape and rarity speak for this car.
