DB4: Finally breaking the million dollar mark?

Collecting & Investing

I have always maintained the view: The DB4 is represents the true essence of Aston Martin.

It is also the line that carries the two most valuable Aston Martin road/race cars – the DB4 GT and the DB4 GT Zagato. It was only a matter of time before the connoisseur and enthusiast would start rating the DB4 over the DB5 – and not only in terms of purity and rarity but also in terms of value.

We might have arrived at this point now. Let me explain.

The DB5 was always the more famous Aston Martin.

It can thank this credit due to the popular film series involving a certain British spy. However for the enthusiast, car collector and connoisseur – he was always drawn more to the DB4 series. Bodied by Touring and built by Tadek Marek who created the superb engine- the DB4 was one of the most sophisticated, expensive and exclusive cars in the world.

It went through five series, each with subtle changes and improvements (for a good overview of the DB4 please see our in-depth report here), until it would be replaced by the DB5 with a larger engine and sadly, a longer wheelbase.

The large advantage the DB4 always had versus the DB5 was that most DB4 did not look alike. All DB5 are, more or less, the same. The collector market is finally waking up to the allure of the DB4.

Looking through the Bonhams annual Aston Martin works sale (for an overview of the sale please see details here), we found a spectacular series III DB4 original left hand drive car (main picture). Notice the open headlights in the front (not all DB4 have open headlights) and the taillights are a long  one- piece version which is correct from series I to III (see picture below).

Purists have long favored early DB4 cars for their clean design.

What is furthermore interesting to take note of -is the estimate: This DB4 series III is estimated at circa USD 1m, which is more than several DB5 that are also being offered by Bonhams. However this DB4 has several great attributes that make it outstanding:

An exceptional restoration job behind it, an attractive original color (Deep carriage Green), matching engine as well as originally left hand drive car-meaning it left the factory in 1961 a left hand drive car (this rare as most Aston Martin left the factory right hand drive).

For more on this beautiful no expense restored Aston Martin DB4 series III car please see details here.
