The oyster flex Daytona is a great watch.

I mentioned how much I love it in my original post but criticised the design of the oyster flex strap as being bulky and unattractive. In Part 2 I actually put this watch to the test for two weeks on the beach. The results are impressive.

If my first post was about wearing the watch one month long for a few days a week (and once to swim), this post is putting the watch to test under high summer temperatures and wearing the watch every single day at the beach for two weeks. 

What I did not realise was just how useful the oyster flex actually is. Two full weeks on the beach with it – have allowed me to test this oyster flex watch in a pretty good way (for usability and comfort) and give you an honest and accurate verdict – at least from my experience.

Yes, the oyster flex itself is bulky and could have been made more attractive, but boy is the technology behind the oyster flex useful!

According to Rolex the oyster flex technology is beneficial in two way: It is light and durable (the material is made from elastomer) and secondly due to the special fins – it absorbs heat and sweat very well. I put it to the test and wore this watch in quite high temperatures (32 -36 degrees Celsius) daily to the beach.

Rolex does not exaggerate when they say it absorbs heat very well.

Even when you sweat a lot, the oyster flex proves its technology works. With a steel or gold oyster bracelet, the sweat can cause a chemical reaction that leaves black marks on your skin – it is basically a mixture of sweat and dirt and grease that has sunk into the oyster bracelet with time and causes this blackness. The oyster flex works perfectly and leaves no trace other than the marks from the fins when worn too tightly (see picture below).

Unlike steel bracelets, the oyster flex proves it works absorbing swear perfectly.

(Even after sweating in over 35 degree heat – no marks other than the fins are left on the oyster flex in terms of grease or dirt as often happens with steel bracelets).

Admittedly, that the watch left traces of the fins on my wrist (see picture above) was completely my fault. With heat your body expands and swells and thus the oyster flex, which normally fit, became too tight. I could and should have used the Easylink system which expands the bracelet by an extra 5mm.

Day after day, with sweat and swimming and sleeping with it, the Oyster flex Daytona proved to be an extremely comfortable watch to wear. After putting it to the test I can safely say:

It is the most comfortable Rolex I own.

Closing thoughts

In my original post I called the oyster flex the perfect summer watch. 

After testing it on the beach, swimming, running, playing sports and sleeping with it I can confirm my original assessment on the watch. It is the perfect summer watch. It absorbs sweat better than any other watch I own and is the most comfortable watch too, despite the weight of white gold.

Indeed ,this Daytona oyster flex proves that sometimes function can take on an even stronger role in importance than design.

In summary, I stick to what I originally wrote about this watch. It is the perfect summer watch, nothing more and nothing less. If anything has changed from my original verdict – it is that the Oyster flex proved itself even better than I thought it would. I view it as a tool watch performed to serve a function. And it did just that perfectly. It is the best heat / sweat absorbing and most comfortable watch that I own.

The oyster flex is a special Rolex for sure and not meant for everyone. Exactly how I like it.
